Model Andrej Pejic Risks Being Overexposed:
Draws on a chilly Winter afternoon, Andrej Pejic is in a Manhattan café with a cup of Earl Grey tea, graceful, sit long legs crossed. The blue-eyed fashion model looks out a window, not aware that almost every man sitting on the surrounding tables is nailed.A man in a black leather jacket walks up to the window, pressing his face against the glass and the cushion. Pejic giggles and admits: “I find it flattering.”
The admirers are probably know that the beautiful blonde is actually a man.
Like the Fashion Week in New York City, Pejic is one of the most recognizable–and controversial–faces in the industry. He is the only top-tier fashion model that the job as a man or a woman can walk. And his androgynous beauty has turned him into a trend setter in an industry that strives to push the envelope always.
“He’s just this beautiful thing that everyone wants a piece of,” says Ken Anderson, who dressed for a German magazine cover Pejic stylist.
He has the kind of face that makes even the vainest wife jealous: high cheekbones, flawless skin and plump, shapely lips. When he speaks, his ever-so-slight Adam’s apple the first character of his manhood.
Although Pejic is not trying to be a woman, many in the transgender community have already claimed him as their own. He is seen as a bit of an outsider, someone who his sexuality without any need for explanation or justification has embraced. Last year, the gay and lesbian magazine called him “style maker of the year” and put him on its cover wearing a Bridal Veil and flowers in his hair.
Pejic graced the covers of magazines 14 last year alone, including an advertising campaign for a Dutch push-up Bra. In 2011, he was the face for a fashion line by designer Marc Jacobs. He has walked the runways for heavyweight designers, including John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier.
French designer Gaultier was so enamored with his gaze from transsexual Pejic that he as a source of inspiration for his 2011 men’s and women’s wear shows, both of which used modeled Pejic. In the Gaultier men Show wore a pistol-packing, a tight black costume Pejic chested as “James Blonde.”
That was a sharp contrast to the women’s show, where crowned with the prized piece Pejic Gaultier in the collection of women’s wear: the dress of the bride of a couture.
French photographer Sebastien Micke, who has photographed transgender models, says Pejic of femininity is effortless.
“Andrei got this thing that super models have: how to pose for the camera,” says Micke. “It’s just natural. “
But life is not always as easy or glamorous for the 20-year-old. Born in Bosnia, spent a large part of his childhood in Pejic a camp of Serb refugees life before his family fled the country for Australia. He was discovered by a talent scout while working at a McDonald’s as a teenager.
Pejic exhibited qualities thought of from a young age, for example, as traditionally female preference that Barbie dolls about toy cars. As a teenager, he often hung out with girls and once for stealing a drugstore makeup was busted. Pejic says acceptance of his friends and family made him comfortable in his own skin.
“I’m lucky in that sense,” he says. “If I had big muscles and furry with a beard were, I wouldn’t be comfortable with that.”
He is 6-feet-1, rail-thin, a woman size 2 or 4. His shoe size is the most problematic. Technically a women size 11, he forced to squeeze his feet to walk in a size 10 in women shows.
Gene Hogan, a representative at DNA models, the Agency represents that Pejic in the u.s., says every week dozens of calls pour in touting a slew of hot new androgynous models: “they say,” Oh, you have to see this guy! He is the black Andrej Pejic! “”
Pejic for each fashion season brings a new wave of headlines and possibilities, including conversations of an odor-line or a possible reality TV show. With New York fashion week–When designers start Thursday, their fall collections debut–it is unclear which shows that he will walk into–any at all.
With the frenzy of media attention in the past year, say industry insiders that pejic risk is overexposed. Having regard to its very niche now, can the the ability to remain the relevant Pejic become difficult. And if his star is rising, it is possible designers can hesitate his persona may overshadow him fear that books, the clothes.
Pejic is only too well of the erratic nature of the fashion business. He plans to attend college, eventually its acceptance have postponed at a University in Australia. As fashion doesn’t work out, he wants to go back to school and major in economics or law.
Open to discuss almost anything, Pejic remains secretive about his sexual orientation. When prompted whether he prefers men or women, he smiles clean coils.
