A man and a woman have died after being hit by a freight train in Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Berowra railway station, in the north of the city, after midnight on Friday after reports that two people had been hit by a train.

The man, in his 20s, and the woman, in her 30s, are understood to have had an argument on the platform before the tragedy, according to the ABC.

He threw something belonging to the woman onto the track and she jumped off the platform to get it.

The man then saw the oncoming train and jumped down to save her.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, their injuries were significant and they died at the scene.

They have not been formally identified.

Officers from Kuring Gai Police Area Command established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
