Fugitive rapist who attacked woman leaving nightclub at Christmas after posing as a Good Samaritan is jailed 10 years in his absence – amid hunt for sex offender

  • Police are still searching for rapist Muarug Gebremcal, 34, who disappeared from his bail address in Plymouth.

A fugitive rapist who attacked a woman leaving a nightclub at Christmas has been jailed for 10 years, despite his absence from court.

Police are still searching for Muarug Gebremcal, 34, who was convicted at Exeter Crown Court in September 2023 but went missing from his bail address in Plymouth.

The hotel worker, originally from Eritrea, befriended his victim as she sat on a wall and tried to call her boyfriend after leaving a Torquay nightclub at around 3.30am in December 2021.

The court heard how Gebremcal posed as a good Samaritan helping her get home safely, but instead took her to his bed on Warren Road, where he raped her.

The woman escaped from the bed and raised the alarm after seeking shelter at a neighbour’s house.

Gebremcal surrendered his passport upon conviction, so he is not thought to have fled the country.

Sentencing Muarug Gebremcal, Judge Anna Richardson said: ‘There was significant pre-planning in which Gebremcal went to a club and waited to identify a lone vulnerable victim.

“The victim was particularly vulnerable due to her intoxication and loneliness.”

When caught, Gebremcal will face a charge of breaching his bail conditions.

Devon and Cornwall Police said Gebremcal had family links to Plymouth, Birmingham and London but could be anywhere in the UK.
