Game of Thrones spin-off in the works from The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin showcasing Aegon Targaryen’s conquest

HBO is getting back into the Game of Thrones business, developing another spin-off that will likely serve as a prequel to House of the Dragon.

The pay cable network is teaming up with writer Mattson Tomlin — who did uncredited work on The Batman and is writing The Batman 2 — for a new GoT spin-off, following Aegon’s Conquest.

It has been established that House of the Dragon takes place approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 100 years after Aegon Targaryen’s conquest.

This series will tell the story of how Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros with his sisters/wives Visenya and Rhanys, and their dragons.

Within two years, he had united six of the Seven Kingdoms—capturing all but Dorne in his conquest.

Aegon was also the first king to rule from a new city now known as King’s Landing, and he also created the Iron Throne, from the swords of his defeated enemies.

He would also start what would become the small council and established the first Hand of the King.

Aegon himself ruled Westeros for nearly 40 years, much of it peacefully, before he died at 63.

His Targaryen family would eventually rule Westeros on the strength of their dragons for nearly 300 years, before Robert’s Rebellion, about 17 years before the start of the Game of Thrones books and TV series.

After Game of Thrones came to an end, HBO developed a number of spin-offs with writer George RR Martin and several other writers.

Only two of these actually come to fruition, the first of which is House of the Dragon, which will debut its second season on HBO later this year.

The second is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight, which is expected to begin filming this year, based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.

As for this potential new series, a source claimed that HBO is taking a “back to basics” approach, though it’s unclear what exactly that means.

Tomlin made his writing and directing debut with 2008’s The Projectionist before writing and directing 2012’s Solomon Grundy, based on one of his short films.

He would go on to write Netflix’s Project Power with Jamie Foxx and Dominique Fishback and Little Fish with House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke.

He recently wrote and directed Mother/Android starring Chloe Moretz, and wrote 2022’s The Batman.

He is currently writing The Batman 2, along with a film adaptation of the 8-bit video game Mega Man and an adaptation of the BRZRKR comic book starring Keanu Reeves.
