Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman described former New England head coach Bill Belichick as ‘socially awkward’ and told a hilarious story about their trip to New York to appear on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.’
During the latest episode of his ‘Games with names’ podcast, Edelman opened up about a private jet ride with his legendary former coach when the two were scheduled to appear on the bench in the wake of their 2017 Super Bowl victory.
New England just pulled off their historic 34-28 comeback win Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons, and was on a media tour to celebrate.
“He was fun,” Edelman said. ‘I mean you know Bill, that’s the only time you can count on that Bill smiling and having a good time. I’m sure five days later he’s at the (NFL) draft.
‘He’s a fun guy. We had some great conversations. We took a jet to New York together right after the Super Bowl.’

Fox Sports host Charissa Thompson appeared as a guest on the podcast and asked Edelman if there had been any “weird awkwardness in conversations” during the trip.
“There’s definitely always discomfort with Bill,” Edelman said. “He’s socially awkward, but in a cool way — like, ‘Ahh, that’s my socially awkward friend.’
Edelman even mentioned that at one point during ‘The Tonight Show’ appearance, Belichick grabbed his hand after the WR joked that his coach was “a big meditator.”
“I could probably say right now … I have to get Bill on this God dang couch (as a guest on his podcast).”

Edelman went on to say he would be upset if Belichick appeared on Pat McAfee’s show before sitting down for an episode of his podcast.
“I swear if he does McAfee before he does my show, it will hurt me,” he said, before joking: “I didn’t make all those team-friendly deals for nothing.”
Edelman played all 11 seasons of his NFL career under Belichick in New England.
During that time, he recorded 620 receptions, 6,822 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns.
