Married NHS anaesthetist, 35, with a young son admits string of child sex offences

An NHS anesthetist, who gave an interview to the BBC as part of the junior doctors’ strike, has admitted a series of child sex offences.

Edward Finn, 35, who is married with a young son, was arrested by police last November and pleaded guilty to the disturbing charges at Nottingham Crown Court last week.

He admitted three counts of making indecent photographs of children, three counts of taking indecent images of children, two counts of voyeurism and one count of sexually assaulting a child under 13.

He pleaded not guilty to three further charges of theft, voyeurism and sexual assault.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said that he would not be tried on these matters but that the judge had ordered that they remain on his file.

Finn qualified as a doctor in 2013 after studying anesthesiology at the University of Nottingham and was given his license to practice by the General Medical Council the following year.

It is understood that he worked at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham’s largest hospital, and that none of the charges relate to patients at the hospital.

In an email to staff, the hospital’s chief executive Anthony May wrote: ‘I am writing to let you know that we are expecting media coverage in the coming days about Dr Edward Finn, a trainee anesthetist in the East Midlands who recently worked for NUH. (Nottingham University Hospitals Trust).

‘On January 19, Dr Finn appeared in the Crown Court charged with a number of serious criminal allegations including sexual assault, voyeurism and charges relating to indecent images.

“Dr Finn pleaded guilty to nine of the 12 charges against him and sentencing is scheduled for March 26.

‘We are shocked and saddened by the nature of these crimes and our thoughts are with those affected.

‘Of the crimes Dr Finn was charged with, the only one that took place on an NUH site was a charge of stealing drugs, to which he pleaded not guilty.

‘There are no charges relating to NUH patients. Following an arrest in November, Dr Finn was in custody and appropriate processes are being followed. We are working with Nottinghamshire Police and NHS England.’

The email advises staff to contact the police if they feel they are a victim of crime and also mentions a 24-hour helpline as well as spiritual and pastoral support available.

Finn, who lives in Nottingham with his wife and son, has been in custody since he was arrested by police in November.

His Facebook page makes humorous references to his work as an anesthesiologist.

Its cover photo shows a crow with the words: ‘You’ll be okay. You have no choice.’
