Punters have lost hundreds of thousands of pounds betting on India to beat England in the first Test in Hyderabad.

Ben Stokes’ side stunned the cricketing world by making comebacks for the centuries on days three and four of the match, eventually winning by 28 runs after sensational performances from Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley.

Pope scored 196 runs to set India a competitive required target of 230 to win the Test, before Hartley recovered from a difficult first innings to take seven wickets, including the last one off Mohammed Siraj to secure victory .

Millions of pounds were of course bet on the game, with India huge favorites to win the game by a majority after securing a first innings lead of 190 runs.

Punters thought they got easy money betting on the home team to win the game, but they ended up losing, with huge sums in the flush that came at the end of the game.

On the Betfair exchange, £683,790 was traded at 1.05, which is odds of 1/20, giving India more than 95 per cent chance of winning the match.

A further £539,832 was traded at 1.06, odds of 1/16, giving India more than a 94 per cent chance of winning, and £389,116 at 1.04 – odds of 1/25.

£94,168 was traded at 1.03, odds of 1/33, and £87,419 at 1.02, odds of 1/50 giving India over 98 per cent chance of winning the match.

The home side, usually such a formidable side on home soil, dominated the first two days, but the game turned when Ollie Pope got going midway through the third day.

Traders took their chances of small profits with the game looking a foregone conclusion, but the visitors had other ideas as they notched up one of their most famous victories.

Hartley, somewhat of a wildcard pick in the team, became the first England spinner since Jim Laker to take a seven-wicket haul on debut, after hitting six off his first ball in the format on day one is.

He dismissed Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Subman Gill, Axar Patel, Srikar Bharat, Ravichandran Ashwin, and finally Mohammed Siraj to ensure a memorable first match for him and a win for his team.
