Squad member Ilhan Omar slammed for ‘disgraceful’ speech saying she is ‘Somalia first’ and pushing an unrecognized deal with Ethiopia
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is accused of ‘treason’ and asks to be removed from Congress. She faced fierce opposition for a speech where she unapologetically declared that she was ‘Somalia first’.
Somaliland Ambassador Rhoda Elmi reposted a video of Omar’s speech on X, calling it ‘sadly indecent’ and ‘lacking common decency’.
The leaked video of Omar’s Jan. 27 speech quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism, including from far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) who accused her colleague of using her position to protect people who ‘hate America’ also said she clearly concedes that she is putting another country before American interests.
Omar called the criticism “totally off” and claimed that she says her top priority as a US member of Congress is to represent the best interests of Somali people in America.
The team member was speaking in Somali at a Minneapolis event on Saturday when the moment was caught on camera and circulated online.
“Sleep well knowing that I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from within the American system,” Omar said, according to a translated version of the video.

Brigitte Gabriel, founder and chair of ACT for America, wrote on X: ‘Ilhan Omar puts Somalia first, Islam second and America last’
She also upheld Somalia’s ‘unity’ against Ethiopia and Somaliland, which is an unrecognized state considered part of Somalia, and supports Somalia to take back land from their country by force.
Brigitte Gabriel, founder and chair of ACT for America, wrote on X: ‘Ilhan Omar puts Somalia first, Islam second and America last.’
“We hope the House leadership and her caucus will take note of her public actions, which do not make her a US Congresswoman nor a representative of the noble house in which she serves,” Elmi wrote in her lengthy statement posted to X is.
Rep. Greene wrote: ‘Terrorist sympathizer Ilhan Omar in her own words: Somali first. Muslim second. She never mentions America.’
“She flaunts using her position as congresswoman to protect Somalia’s border while our border is being invaded by MILLIONS of illegals who are a danger to America,” she added. “These people hate America and they are so emboldened by the Democrats’ contempt for our country, they don’t even try to hide it anymore.”
Oamr said in her speech that ‘the US government will only do what Somalis in the US tell them to do. They will do what we want and nothing else.’
“They must follow our orders and that is how we will protect the interests of Somalia,” she adds. ‘We Somalis must have the confidence in ourselves to call the shots in the US’
“Together we will protect the interests of Somalia.”
Americans for Prosperity Tennessee Ambassador Robby Starbuck accused Omar of ‘publicly professing allegiance to a foreign nation and using her position in government to put that foreign nation first.’
“This is treason,” he declared. ‘Ilhan Omar is an agent for Somalia. It’s all out in the open. At least she should be removed from Congress. Absolutely insane.’

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) also weighed in with a post on X saying Omar is ‘showing off using her position as congresswoman to protect Somalia’s border’ and accusing her of ‘hating America’
This is not the first time that there have been calls to remove Omar from her post in the US House of Representatives.
Omar’s past anti-Semitic comments as well as his demand that Israel stop defending itself against Hamas terrorists in Gaza have led to calls from Republicans for her removal from Congress and prompted resolutions of censure from colleagues.
She is part of the progressive ‘group’ of lawmakers, which includes people like Reps. Includes Alexandria Ocasi-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rsahida Tlaib, who is Palestinian-American.
Of those who claim Omar is ‘Somalia first’ based on her comments over the weekend, the lawmaker claims: ‘It’s not just slanted, it’s completely off, but I wouldn’t expect more from these propagandists.’
‘I pray for them and for their sanity. No nation-state can survive if its states engage in land lease negotiations with other countries without the consent of the federal government,’ she added in a post on X. ‘Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are united in that effort and I stand in solidarity with them.’
“No amount of harassment and lies will ever change that.”
