This city is ready to take the mantle as America’s favorite pizza style – and its not New York or Chicago
National Pizza Day is on February 9 and one city in the Midwest is ready to take the helm as America’s favorite slice.
Pizza restaurant sales are set to reach a peak of $46.9 billion in 2022, according to the report Statistics. In the first quarter of 2023, a survey found that pizza was the most ordered type of fast food in the United States and the most ordered type among all age groups.
While many of the top chains like Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Little Caesars sell round pies ranging from New York style to Chicago deep dish, one Michigan city-style pizza is gaining popularity.
Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pan pizza characterized by a thick, often crispy and chewy crust.
The pie is said to have been invented over 75 years ago at Buddy’s Pizza in the Motor City by Gus Guerra and a group of friends.

In 1946, Buddy’s baked the pies in forged steel pans borrowed from local auto plants.
“Influenced by square Sicilian-style pizza, Detroit Style Pizza consistently impresses pizza lovers with its unique layered structure and beautiful presentation,” says the restaurant’s website.
‘The style turns traditional pizza on its head by starting with double firm dough that fits perfectly into a square pan – a process that allows the dough to rise and stretch twice – followed by the backwards layers of topping.’
The topping is placed directly on the dough, then topped with a blend of Wisconsin brick cheese created specifically for Buddy’s.
According to the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, ‘When young, brick cheese is deliciously mild with just a tiny bit of nuttiness. Give it some time to age, though, and it moves into more complex, sharp, even spicy territory.’
Finally, three streaks of sauce are brushed over the pizza before it is placed in the oven to bake.
Chicago-style pizzas can be prepared in a variety of ways, including the usual deep dish (pictured) or stuffed pie, as well as a thin crust version
New York-style pies are large hand-tossed thin-crust pizzas that are flexible enough to fold
‘(It’s) probably the crisp, crunchy edges and bottom with the pillowy inner dough. It’s such a great vehicle to bring the pizza to the people,’ Jeremy Damaske, owner of Pie Sci Pizza in Detroit, which sells 700 to 1,000 Detroit-style pies weekly, told the site. Wealth of Geeks.
“We get a lot of people from out of town who come in specifically to eat the Detroit-style pizza. I would say the vast majority of responses are very positive,” said Damaske.
Motown-style pizzas can be found all over the country and have earned its rank as a top pizza destination.
The average American consumes a staggering 288 slices each year, according to a report released by Pizza Hut.
Overall, people indulge in pizza three times a month in the US, with North Dakota leading the way at 3.5 times a month.
The report was commissioned by Pizza Hut between December 22, 2023 and January 5, 2024, which surveyed 5,000 American adults.
